Main Stakeholder: Managing Director

Effective development, management and promotion of special events can promote and strengthen the Department of Internal Medicine’s reputation for excellence and is a vital part of doing business effectively. Funds spent on events should:

  • Be appropriate to the occasion
  • Not be lavish or excessive, or harmful to the department’s reputation.

Long Service Awards

The Anniversary Years of Service recognizes service milestones for both support staff and academic faculty throughout their careers at: the hospital; University Medical Group (UMG); or the University of Manitoba. Gifts are provided by the hospital, University Medical Group or the university. Anniversary gift intervals vary depending on the organization. Recognition events will be held in accordance with hospital, University Medical Group, and/or university policies and procedures.

Retirements and Resignations

To celebrate the exceptional contribution of faculty (with 10 or more years of service) during their career with the department, a gift will be presented to the retiree at a recognition event organized by the section.

Leadership Recognition

Effective leaders engage colleagues in ways that promote a common understanding of the section’s goals and objective, promote a positive work environment and are actively involved in the mentorship and development of others. Recognition events will be held for academic leaders (e.g. Section Heads, Program Heads)

Department of Medicine Winter Party

Hosted by the department to celebrate the holiday season with faculty and staff, and their families.

Faculty Dinner

Annual Faculty Dinner hosted by the Department to honour research and teaching excellence.

Research and Teaching Awards

Research Chair Announcements

Over the last decade, the department has been aggressive in developing Endowed Research Chairs. To recognize donors and the announcement of the Chair, the department plans a recognition event. New Chair holders are required by University policy to give a public lecture within the first year of the appointment.

Event Budget

It is recognized that the cost of special events may vary appreciably depending upon the venue and the nature of the function. In this respect, the costs per person should be reasonable and consumption of alcohol should not be excessive.

Special Lectures

Most of the special events are organized by the Communications and Special Events Officer.
