Biography
Dr. Wilkins is Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. He received a BSc in Biology and Chemistry and a Master's in Biology (membrane biology) from the University of Waterloo, and a PhD in cellular immunology from the University of Manitoba. He is the founding and current Director of the Manitoba Centre for Proteomics and Systems Biology, and the Head of the Section of Biomedical Proteomics in the Department of Internal Medicine. His goal is to facilitate the uptake and integration of high content systems-based approaches in basic and biomedical research. He uses mass spectrometry extensively in conjunction with immunological, aptamer-based, and enzyme activity-based methods for the development of analytical methods for discovery and implementation in a range of clinical systems including renal function, transplant rejection and rheumatic diseases. His basic research deals with the molecular basis of lymphoid cell polarization and movement. In 2006 he was a co-recipient of the $250,000 NSERC Brockhouse Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering for Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry. Dr. Wilkins serves as an internal reviewer for granting agencies including Canada Institutes for Health Research, Canadian Cancer as well as several international agencies in Ireland, Australia, Spain, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. He is a member of the College Reviewers for Canada Foundation for Innovation and Canada Research Chair Program.
